FedEx Custom Critical Implements Zip-to-Zip Quoting
New System Provides More Accurate Estimated Delivery Times

For Immediate Release: May 5, 2000

AKRON, Ohio — FedEx Custom Critical, North America's largest time-specific, critical-shipment carrier, is introducing zip-to-zip quoting, a more accurate system of calculating shipment mileage and rates.

Using ALK Associates' PC*MILER 2000 commercial routing and mapping software, FedEx Custom Critical now calculates mileage for each shipment based on the shipper's and receiver's exact zip or Canadian postal codes. The carrier formerly used city-to-city calculations.

The system provides the following advantages:

  • Improved accuracy in routing and estimated pickup and delivery times, which the company calculates to the minute;
  • Improved accuracy in pricing, which the company quotes to the penny.

In addition, the Department of Defense (DOD) recognizes the PC*MILER 2000 mileage standard for shipments for government groups and agencies.

"Customers prefer zip-to-zip quoting, and we've changed systems to provide even better information and service for them," said Jack Pickard, vice president of service. "With the new system, delivery times and price quotes are based more closely on the shipment origin and destination."

FedEx Custom Critical provides exclusive-use, time-specific, non-stop, door-to-door shipping service throughout the U.S. and Canada and within Europe. Among its divisions are White Glove Services®, for shipments that require special care in handling, and CharterAir®, which offers an array of expedited air solutions to meet customers' critical delivery times.
